Let me introduce you to the ami’mater.
I made this little guy just for kicks for a friend as a birthday gift. Every time I saw her it seemed like she was either toting tomatoes to give to someone or she was talking about them. So what better gift than an everlasting (and terribly cute, I might add) tomato? I looked around for some amigurumi tomato patterns, but I didn’t find anything that I really liked. The one I liked best was in Japanese, to boot, so I kind of had to wing it.
But it turned out pretty well, I thought, and I included a note that wished her a year full of delicious tomatoes. Except she didn’t plant any more, so I’m not really sure where that leaves her. I sure do wish I could get good tomatoes all year long, though!
For anyone who would like to make their own little ami’mater, here’s about how it went:
MC:
Rnd 1: 6 sc into adjustable base ring. Mark either first or last sc with stitch marker. Do not join rounds.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around (12 sc).
Rnd 3: (2 sc in next, sc) around (18 sc).
Rnd 4: (2 sc in next, sc in next 2) around (24 sc).
Rnd 5: (2 sc in next, sc in next 3) around (30 sc).
Rnd 6: (2 sc in next, sc in next 4) around (36 sc).
Rnd 7: (2 sc in next, sc in next 5) around (42 sc).
Rnd 8: (2 sc in next, sc in next 6) around (48 sc).
Rnd 9: (2 sc in next, sc in next 7) around (54 sc).
Rnd 10-16: sc in ea st around (54 sc).
Rnd 17: (sc tog, sc in next 7) around (48 sc).
Note: attach eyes if desired and begin stuffing before the opening gets too small to work with – additional stuffing will probably be required as you go and before you tie off and sew in your end.
Rnd 18: (sc tog, sc in next 6) around (42 sc).
Rnd 19: (sc tog, sc in next 5) around (36 sc).
Rnd 20: (sc tog, sc in next 4) around (30 sc).
Rnd 21: (sc tog, sc in next 3) around (24 sc).
Rnd 22: (sc tog, sc in next 2) around (18 sc).
Rnd 23: (sc tog, sc in next) around (12 sc).
Rnd 24: sc tog around (6 sc).
Finish off.
CC:
Chain 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 st.
Chain 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 7 st.
Chain 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 5 st.
Chain 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 8 st.
Chain 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 st.
Join with sl st to form five pointed round. Draw up yarn through center and sl st around in end of each leaf to tighten the middle and begin the stem. Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 st. Tie off and stabilize stem by sewing yarn through base of stem and under leaves a few times. Tie off and secure to top of tomato; I tacked each leaf down only near the base of the stem so that it was sufficiently secured, but still allowed some posing capability. Also, each leaf can be made to whatever your desired length may be, either symmetrically or not; just chain one more stitch than you want in sc length to allow for the turn.
I recommend using a crochet hook that is two to three sizes smaller than suggested on whatever yarn you choose to use. For example, I used Caron’s Simply Soft yarn (in red and dk sage), which calls for an H/5.0 mm crochet hook, but I used an E/3.5mm hook for this project, which results in a tighter stitch and allows for fuller stuffing.
